Dr. Michael Bradley on Early Adolescence and Parenting
On Thursday, May 7 in the Glenbard South Little Theater, Dr Paul Donahue concluded the 2008-2009 Glenbard parent-speaker series with a program entitled Daring to Care: Raising TODAY's Teens.
Our society encourages teenagers to focus on their academic, athletic and artistic achievements, but much less attention is given to helping them become good citizens. Dr Donahue explained how adolescents’ self-esteem and sense of identity is defined in large part by how they treat others -- reviewing the research and practical implications of what it means to help teens develop empathy for their peers, classmates, and others in need and strategies for encouraging caring behaviors. Dr. Donahue also reviewed some of the hazards that teens face in the world of online communication and social networking sites such as Facebook. Dr. Paul J. Donahue is the author of Parenting Without Fear: Letting Go of Worry and Focusing on What Really Matters. Glenbard District 87 and the Glendale Heights Police Department presented "Parents, Teens, Parties and the Law", an informative panel discussion on the realities of today's teen scene, at Glenbard East High School,
Parents and teens learned about their rights and responsibilities, and life-saving information from DuPage County State's Attorney Joe Birkett; Judges Blanche Fawell and Jane Mitton; Clinical Director of Addiction Medicine at Alexian Brothers Behavioral Health Hospital Linda Lewaniak; Glenbard West Assistant Principal for Athletics Linda Oberg; Glenbard East school social worker Binita Donohue; Carol Stream Police Department social worker Kathleen McNamara, school resource officers George Pappas, Mike Summerville and Manny Camuy. Milton Creach - Parenting Is the Key Feb 17, 2009 Glenbard East High School-Glenbard District 87 Parent Program
Motivational speaker, television personality, author and consultant, MILTON CREAGH is best known for his hard-hitting, inspirational talks to high school students and his common sense training programs for parents. In his presentation to the Glenbard community , Milton reaffirmed parents as the most critical component in their childs' development and ability to remain drug free. As noted in his book Nobody Wants Your Child Mr Creagh explored the things parents do that make it difficult for children to achieve as adults -- at work, in marriage, and in society in general. Milton discussed the growing problem of lack of work- ethic among the nation’s youth and provided a blueprint to get teens back on the right track for a successful life.
